Music Memories – This Week – Wonderwall

The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone. That is what this new article is all about. Each fortnight, we will take a look at a different song and I will take you as a trip down memory lane as to what it means to me. Welcome to Music Memories.

Track: Wonderwall
Artist: Oasis
Original Release Date: 30th October 1995

There are many stories I can relate to Oasis, however I thought today I would tell you about one where it makes me look a bit silly but it is also fun. I was working one summer as an activity leader for International students and it was part of our job to host entertainment for them in the morning, noon and night when they were not in lessons. One of the evenings we held a talent show where the students could get involved.

As part of the show, the staff also did a few things as well as part of the show. One of the performances we wanted to do was a a song where everyone could sing along to and it became a decision that we were all going to get everyone to sing along to the Oasis song Wonderwall.

The person who was meant to perform the guitar dropped out (I cannot remember why) so I was asked to step in as I also had my own one on site. I get incredibly nervous performing in front of audiences and was worried I would forget the chords even when I had played the song over and over again. So to create a solution, I wrote all the chords in permanent marker on my leg.

The performance went well and everyone got involved but I then had to spend ages scrubbing my leg off for ages to get rid of the chords.
