Sunday Book Club – Madly, Deeply – The Alan Rickman Diaries, Alan Rickman

Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are looking at the book about Alan Rickman and his diaries.

Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries (2015)

Alan Rickman

Synopsis

Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today.

But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Fans of memoirs at large will delight in the intimate experience of reading Rickman detailing the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is ‘anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid’. He grants us access to his thoughts, not only on plays, films and the craft of acting, but also politics, friendships and life.

The Rickman Diaries was written with the intention to be shared, and reading it is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.

Positive Points

If you are a fan of Alan Rickman then this will give you a real insight into the life that he lived and the world that he was a part of. The whole book is a diary and it means that the opinions and the stories are honest, it was released after he passed away by his estate and it is a really nice way for fans to remember him by.

Negative Points

It is a diary that spans over many years and even though not all the entries are in the book, it does make it a long one to read spanning over 400 entries. Due to the fact that it is a diary it can feel very long at times so be aware that it is a book that will take you a while to read.

Overall Review

I think that this book is a great way to remember the actor and is a way to really understand more about his true personality behind the cameras. Whilst it may be seen as a good read to find out all about Alan Rickman, it is also a bit repetitive at times due to the fact it is a diary so be prepared for that. I agree with the synopsis where it says The Rickman Diaries was written with the intention to be shared, and reading it is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.
