Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Wild Horse

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Our latest single is called “Cougar” it’s out everywhere now. It’s an electric fusion of funk and gospel music. It’s definitely our most ambitious release yet. One of our biggest goals is to push our musical boundaries and create music which is truly original and unique to us. This is our first release of 2023 and throughout the year the songs we release are really going to channel that musical ambition that we crave. Expect more extremely unique songs to come.

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

We actually released an album before we even released a single. Strange, I know, but we were only 12 years old at the time and were just trying to find our bearings. We were essentially a completely different band to what we are now. I do remember feeling a strong sense of achievement, I was very proud of the album as was everyone in the band. It’s not available on streaming platforms anymore because times change and we’ve grown into a different band. With every release though, it always feels the same. A mixture of nerves and excitement. The best part is seeing that all your fans love the release. It’s still so cool to us that people actually listen to our music. People’s days are being soundtracked by Wild Horse.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Ooh, that is a tough one. It’s really hard to pick a favourite, it changes all the time. My favourite right now is probably an unreleased track. But as for an album track, at the moment I’d say “Coffee in the Morning” off our album “When The Pool is Occupied”. It’s a song close to my heart. It’s about a fairly turbulent time in my life but one which I look back on fondly. It’s definitely a fan favourite too.

Your favourite song to play live:

Again, this is tough. It changes all the time. At the moment it’s probably our new single “Cougar”. We played it live for the first time the other night and it was so fun. We’ve added the gospel samples into our live show using a sample pad and it just brings the song to life. I’m really enjoying it at the moment.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Erm, probably an unreleased song I’ve written. We have so many unreleased songs because I’m writing so often. It’s like therapy to me. I wrote a song about school shootings in the US and knife crime in the UK. That took a while because, due to the weight of the subject it tackles, I wanted it to be perfect. It will come out at some point, but only when it feels like the right time for us. We don’t want to be seen as taking advantage of these horrible events and situations. So, when it feels right, we’ll release it.

Your most emotional track:

Probably “Breakthrough” off our album “When the Pool is Occupied”. I was going through a fairly intense breakup at the time, and I used that song to just pour all my feelings into. It was good therapy for sure.

The best lyric you have ever written:

There’s another unreleased track which is about someone slowly descending into madness because a girl he loves is in love with someone else and she doesn’t notice him. I thought it was an interesting subject to tackle, the idea of documenting someone losing their mind. There’s a lyric where the character in the song blames Gary Barlow from Take That for his romantic short comings. The line is: “It’s been a million love songs later and you still don’t know I care…Gary Barlow’s lying and now I’m in despair”. It always makes me laugh, that lyric.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

Euphoria. There’s nothing we love more than playing live. It’s where our soul is as a band. I think we’re all at our most comfortable in life when we’re on stage performing. I’ll never get over the feeling of seeing a room of people singing lyrics which you wrote in your bedroom back to you. Nothing will ever beat it. We’re addicted to it.

The hardest track to play live:

To be honest, we’ve been doing shows for so long that it all just comes naturally to us. We know exactly what we’re doing for every song. It’s like second nature. So, I don’t think there is a track we find hard to play live.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Of course, there’s the obvious. Instruments, gear etc. for me personally, I have to have my honey tea. It soothes the voice so I’m always drinking it. We also all like to explore fashion so we bring loads of clothes with us for the shows. I’m also big into manifestation and meditation. I meditate before every show. I have a manifestation book which was gifted to me by a friend which I bring along with me regularly.

Describe your fans in three words:

The best ever.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

A good question. I would say probably “Backstabbers” by the O’Jays. It’s a classic and it’s what got me into soul music. It’s such an intense and brilliant piece of music. I love it. If I wrote that song, I’d be a very happy man.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

This will be our best year yet. We’re constantly levelling up with our music and the music we release this year will be our best music yet. We’re also playing loads of shows. We’re going on a UK tour in April, and we will be doing another UK tour in June. We’re working on getting to play for our international fans in other countries too. It’s going to be a ride; you definitely will not want to miss it.
