Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first! Today we look at the brand new EP by Catbells – Wilderness
Wilderness
This is both the opening track and the name of the EP and it is a great song to ease you into the world of Catbells, whilst the song is full of mellow melodies that have a sort of echo to them it really highlights the emotion and the depth of the lyrics. The song has a real indie alternative feel to it and feels like it combines the elements of pop with a hint of folk as well. To me this feels like it has influences from artists such as Nora Jones but it also has a sort of Radiohead element to it as well in some places. It is one of those songs that you can imagine listening to on a hot day when you are relaxing and sitting by the pool.
Fade
This song welcomes you with this fun beat that sets the pace for the track and sort of makes it a toe tapper. It is another track where the lyrics are thrown front and centre to be the star and it creates this really interesting balance with the melody that it feels like it takes you on a metaphorical journey. The thing that is great about this EP is that the songs feel like they are being performed to you personally and not recorded in a studio, this is what is great about Catbells stripped back approach to a song, keep it simple for maximum impact.
I Wish
This is the last track on the EP and the introduction is a lot longer on this song to the others and introduces these electronic sounds to again paint this picture of the world that the lyrics are going to transport you to. The beat in this track has a bit more bass to it which creates this sense of drama to the song and creates a fun track to end the EP on. If this is what Catbells has to offer with only three tracks, I think it will be very interesting to see what an album in the future will include as I am sure it will take you away to a unique world of escapism.
