Don’t Mess Improv Month – INTERVIEW – Meet Simone

For July we are very excited to be able to go behind the scenes of the new improv team on the block, Don’t Mess. Don’t Mess is a global all women and non-binary improv team and their shows explore the world of zoom meetings because who knew there could be so much fun that could be created from this world! All this week we are getting to meet a different member of the team, today we talk to Simone.

Player Profile – Simone

Hello Simone how long have you been improvising?

9 years

How did you get into improv?

I’ve been doing theatre all my life, but at one point was living in two countries and wasn’t able to commit to rehearsals for scripted theatre in either country. I attended an improv workshop and the rest is history…

What is your favourite style of improv and why?

My favourite style is actually dramatic improv, which leans towards more grounded improv, building on character and relationships.

Who are your top 5 favourite improvisers and why?

This is such a difficult question! There are so many wonderful improvisers around, it’s impossible to pick 5 improvisers! So I’m just going to say my Don’t Mess team mates, because they are awesome!

What is your favourite warm up game?

Convergence/Mind Meld

Favourite short form game?

I love guessing games – eg. Late for Work.

What are the three top tips anyone has ever taught you in improv?

Play characters that like each other.

Discover, don’t create.

Listen to what is being said, don’t think of what your reply is going to be.

In no more than 5 words, what advice would you give them?

Use what’s there.

What are some of your favourite new acts you have come across this year and why?

I love the work Queen City Comedy is doing, creating new troupes with people all over the world via their Global Improv Project.

How would you describe your personal sort of improv?

I tend to go for grounded, relationship-based improv, so perhaps I would describe it as theatrical.
