Off The Record – Magic Of The Music Video Special – Steptacular, Steps

Last year, we launched a brand new set of articles called The Magic of The Music Video which looks at videos that have inspired me as a Video Editor. Well, I thought I would bring that article to life in more ways then one by celebrating certain albums that some of those singles have come off of. Why do this you ask? Well, you may know the songs but may of never actually listened to the albums so welcome to this section of this feature that will happen throughout the year.  In December we featured Steps so today we are looking at today at the album where Deeper Shade Of Blue came from – Steptacular

Make It Easy on Me

This is a classic style of pop song, more uplifting and more of a faster tempo then your average ballad but it is a love song and has a very early noughties style to it. The song also may be good for people that are fans of Abba as it has that sort of sound to it. Also the song has a summer feel to it that you can imagine listening to on a hot day. The lyrics are all about a relationship and whether it is ending or not and even though it is sad the song is pretty cheery.

Movin’ On

This is a song that has a real classic Steps sound to it and even now I cannot believe that it wasn’t a single as it is a track you can imagine there being a dance routine to it (and I made up many of them when I was a kid.) This song has a really fast beat to it which is sort of a mix of pop and electronic to it. It is a really catchy track with a bridge and a chorus which are easy to learn and make you want to sing along.

Since You Took Your Love Away

This song opens up with a really dramatic introduction that i feel emphasises the emotion that is about to be connoted in the lyrics so this song. This is a classic break up sort of song and it also a track where you can hear the vocal talents of the band. It is a nice little track in the middle of the album. The musical interludes have a sense of The Corrs to them.

My Best Friend’s Girl

This song has a real sense of the track Tragedy to it and it feels like it samples the same sort of musical construction. This is a track where H and Lee take the reigns and it is quite refreshing to hear a song where it is the males of Steps and not the females. It is an uplifting track where you can hear the emotion of the song shine through.
