With the difficult times we are facing at the moment, it is the perfect time to try something new whilst you are forced to stay indoors and over the next couple of weeks we are interviewing acts that are putting on everything from projects to lessons. Today, we are talking to musician Asher Knight a 22 year old singer and song writer. He is also an inspirational voice for schools all over the UK as he discusses how to battle mental health struggles. During Lockdown he has set up a community on Facebook where people are open to talk about struggles they are going through. I caught up with Asher to find out more about it.
Hello there tell us a little bit about yourself!
My names Asher Knight and I’m a singer songwriter from Yorkshire.
Tell us all about the project that you are bringing to the online world at the moment?
During lockdown I thought it would amazing to bring my fans together online fully. I created a Facebook group called “Save Me From Myself” name after one of my songs with the aim of people being open to talk about struggles they are going through in a safe environment where they are reminded they are not alone.
What times does it run throughout the day?
It 24/7 which is amazing.
How much does it cost , what platform etc?
It’s absolutely free and ran on Facebook.
How was the project formed?
So just before Lockdown I was visiting schools talking about mental health and when the schools shut due to lockdown I needed a new way to let people not feel so alone.
The main thing I notice with people struggling with their mental health is they don’t want to talk to anyone and feel very alone, usually when I perform an talk with students some of them open up and talk with teachers. So not being able to do that I united my fan base in a safe place to talk and remind them that their not alone.
How has it been going so far?
Amazing !! it’s been great seeing my followers interact with each other and it’s helped me and them feel not so alone during lockdown.
With everything happening in the world at the moment, why is it so important to have activities like yours available?
It’s beyond important. Mental health is massively important, as it can lead on to terrible situations if not helped, so creating an environment that is large or small but is safe for people to talk and feel comfortable is important. It’s not an answer to solving mental health but it’s helping people open up and feel comfortable going to their parents, teachers, guardians and talk about how they are struggling.
What can people expect over the next few weeks from your project?
The great thing is that the people who join run it. Anyone can ask for advice or just express how they are feeling and that can open up some amazing conversations.
So in the next few weeks I hope that the project just helps people feel free during what can feel like a difficult situation.
If people want to find out more about you on social media where shall they visit?
Best placed to find about me is on fakebook, Instagram, twitter and my username is @asherknightuk
Finally why should people get involved?
People should get involved if they feel like they need a community filled with people that feel free to be able to talk honestly about how they feel.
