Improv Corner – Emotional Household…

Today I want to talk about a fun game we used to play a lot on the Newcastle Improv Scene and haven’t really played or seen it played this way since. Although, the point of this article is not to say “hey play this game” I just think it is a great game to work with even as an exercise to focus on emotions.

So firstly, the game is all about two players – you need to get a suggestion for a really mundane and boring household chore such as hoovering, ironing or even washing up. The scene that you will play will be short and sweet. The first time you do this scene you will play it neutral, the next few times is when it becomes fun.

You get the suggestions of three completely different emotions and then you will replay the same scene exactly the same three more times. The whole idea is to play these repeat scenes incredibly heightened – so this is making the emotions so high that they are beyond silly – that is where the comedy comes from.

It is a really fun game to play and it is a great way to practice emotions. Doing emotions can be difficult for some people but putting yourself into a game where you just have to go crazy can really work. I have played the game with improvisers that are pretty shy or timid in regards to doing emotions and this game really brings those people out of their shell because it is so ridiculous and fun at the same time.
