As you may know, I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are looking at a band that I actually only really started to like BECAUSE of their music videos. I couldn’t really stand their music when they first came out but then I started to watch their videos and it was much after Under The Cork Tree came out but much before the next album, I became a fan but this happened because of the videos (and still am as this site is dedicated to one of my favourite set of lyrics by them) – Fall Out Boy.
Fall Out Boy – Dance Dance
Why did you choose this particular video?
This is the first music video that really got me interested in Fall Out Boy, I remember vaguely that it came onto a music channel I was watching when I was a teenager (more then likely Kerrang!) and it came on and I decided to watch it and it was like no other I had seen before. It took me a while to like the song but the video I really enjoyed the narrative and the way they could take the mickey out of themselves.
So, what is the narrative?
Prom, where Fall Out Boy who are depicted as ‘geeks’ don’t care anymore what people think of them.
Favourite parts of the video?
The first thing that I need to mention is the music, it intertwines diegetic and non diegetic music and creates this really interesting echo sound throughout the video which is quite rare in music videos. A lot of the time it is bands miming to their songs but the fact they have brought both worlds together is very clever.
I adore the mix of fast and slow paced editing in this video – a lot of it is fast paced to go in time with the drum beat but ever so often it will slow down the pace and create an emphasis on the Fall Out Boy that is on stage and it is wonderful.
The dancing and the comedy of taking the mickey out of the common prom. UK proms are nothing like this and it always made me jealous they were never what you saw in American films and television shows but I adore this video that it heightens the USA version you see and added loads of comedy to it. I love the fact its not from the love story of a film but from the underdogs and that they become the heroes so to speak. Pete Wentz dancing at the end always makes me laugh.
