Off The Record – ALBUM FOCUS – An Invitation to an Alternate Reality, New Politics

Have you ever wanted To listen to a new band or musician and not sure where to start? Well, instead of listening to their commercial music, why not start with something off the album first!  Today we look at the latest album by New Politics that was released earlier this month – An Invitation to an Alternate Reality

Unstoppable

This is the opening track on the album and it is already obvious that New Politics sound has changed since their last album and feels like it had essences of their older style in it.  It is a catchy opening to this new chapter as it brings their shouty rap style with singing together with some fun new ways. I really like the trumpet interlude it’s a new sound for them and it works.

Bad For Me

This song opens with a sharp short sound that is similar to The Specials and it has a feeling of Ska to it which really suits New Politics style. The lyrics are quite powerful and I think this only really works because of ska sound it changes pace throughout which means that it tell effects the way you listen to the song.

Suspension

This is a really unusual sound for New Politics at first it sounds a bit messy but when you give it a chance you realise it sort of really suits this band. It has a big hip hop and dance influence that’s creates this really unusual electronic sound. Since their American tour is based on Virtual Reality I really hope they do something special with this song as it feels like an art project.

Death Of Me

This song has an uplifting drum beat even though they lyrics say you’ll be the death of me kill me In my dreams it has a catchy drum beat that has an electronic style that is sort of fun and yet again really works with new politics style. The guitars creatr a subtle rhythm but it has essence of the eighties to it. Fun little song.
