Do you remember the Playstation 2 Eye Toy? Do you remember not really knowing what the point of it was? It’s funny, when you think of gaming now and how much it has developed and you do have to wonder whether it is games like this that paved the way for the augumented reality and virtual reality based games. It may not of done and I haven’t researched it but that is always in the back if my mind. Each EyeToy came with the game EyeToy Play.
EyeToy: Play was released on the 4th February 2003, it was developed by SLE London Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game featured 12 mini games that the player could choose to play each doing different tasks by using your body to interact with the objects and the enemies.
The game could be played both as single player or multiplayer. A lot of the games were against a timer and trying to beat the top scores. Also when you were playing with the EyeToy would take photos of you in action – you could also take these when you reached top scores. The Eyetoy Play sold at least 600,000 copies in the United Kingdom alone whilst also receiving the Double Platinum award in sales.
I remember having the Eyetoy when I was in college and my friend would come to my place to play it. As a multiplayer it was great fun ad the photo option i think was the most used part for me personally. However, on your own you had to be in the mood to play it – which sometimes required a great effort. It was fun but it was one you definitely had to be in the mood for.
