Tidbits With David Escobedo

THIS IS A SERIES BY DAVID ESCOBEDO THAT OFFERS A SIMPLIFIED PERSPECTIVE ON THREE BASIC OR SMALL ELEMENTS OF IMPROV. THERE ARE SURELY WAYS TO DECONSTRUCT AND FIND EXCEPTIONS. IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND ANYTHING IN IMPROV THAT OPERATES UNIVERSALLY. THESE ARE OFFERED AS ONE PERSPECTIVE THAT MAY HELP SOME PEOPLE, AND ARE JUST TIPS OF THE ICEBERG WHEN IT COMES TO THE CONCEPTS.

DAVE

BIG BOLD OFFERS

Be careful that big bold offers do not undermine the scene, but instead give your teammates a great deal of fruit to pull from.

GOING TO THE WELL

If something gets a laugh in a scene, it can become a sign of insecurity if the team keeps rounding back to it for a laugh. Hit with confidence not with desperation.

Trust yourself.

Dare to be boring.

Something else will hit.

DON’T UPSTAGE

magine always allowing a clear channel or line of sight between all actors and the audience.
