Today we look a lovely little town in the middle of Dorset – Dorchester. The town is located between Poole and Bridgeport.
Dorchester is a historic town market town that was founded in prehistoric times. It has a really interesting history that also includes Romans and parts of the walls they built to surround the town are still seen in the area today.
The town is featured in many famous pieces of writings including Thomas Hardy (he based the fictional town of Castlebridge fro the book Mayor of Castlebridge on Dorchester) and John Caspers Powys’s Maiden Castle.
The town is home to some notable places that if you went to Dorchester you should take time to explore. There are 293 structures that are protected by Historic England as Grade I or Grade II buildings this includes the Church of St George, Max Gate and a Roman Town House.
The town is home to many places for tourists will enjoy such as Max Gate which is a 19th Century house Tom Hardy lived in, the Dorset Teddy Bear Museum and The Tutankhamen Exhibition.
I have been there a few times before and it is a really nice place to walk around and has some wonderful little places to find along the way.
