Ok, so this show isn’t ‘officially’ a Brighton Fringe show but if you do happen to be in the area then you have to go and see this. Improvengers Assemble is a show collaboration between The Just Us League and Tom from The Noise Next Door. The show is this Sunday at 18:45 at the Caxton Arms. I was super excited to find out more about it so I interviewed the guys to find out more.
Hello tell us all about who you all are and a little bit about yourselves?
J: We are Gary & Javier (THE JUST US LEAGUE – the UK’s premiere nerd culture double act/writers and creators of MARVELus, Improvengers and OVERWATCHed) and Tom Livingstone (one fifth of Edinburgh daaaaahlings, The Noise Next Door)
How did the show come about?
Tell us a little bit about the show that are happening this week?
Have you done the Brighton Fringe before?
J: Technically, we’re not doing it this year!
T: Yeah, I don’t think we actually registered to be part of the fringe officially, did we?
G: I didn’t.
J: Nope.
T: Right.
G: But we have all done it before. Great festival. Would recommend.
Your show is just after the release of the the Avengers film as well – are you going to be incorporating any of the stories from that? If so how are you going to make sure it doesn’t ruin the story for people who haven’t seen it yet?
G: No, it’s going to be a brand new Marvel movie everyday using suggestions from the audience.
J: I’m sure soooome references will trickle in!
T: Oh, definitely. Nerds love a niche reference.
Who is your favourite characters from the Marvel Universe to bring into a show and why?
G: Groot’s always a pain in the arse! People ALWAYS suggest him!!
J: You can always have fun with Hawkeye… people instantly recognise him as an underdog.
T: Poor Hawkeye.
Do you base your characters on any of the actors from the films who play them or do you do your own spin?
T: A bit of both. We have guest players every show and we love having “wild card” players who don’t know anything about the characters.
G: Yeah, we once had someone who just played Winter Soldier as being always cold.
Just like Marvel films do you do a post show credit?
J: Obvs. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a Marvel Movie.
What about a guest appearance by the late Stan Lee?
J: We have an awesome take on that but we don’t want to give any spoilers!
What is your favourite character from the Marevl Universe?
J: Cap
G: Star Lord
T: Thor… Ragnarok, not 1 or 2.
Who is your least favourite and why?
J: Dr. Strange. He’s just SO smug! He has no bedside manner.
G: Nebula. Stop whinging, you’re a cool android!!
T: Thor… 1 and 2.
What improv styles do you want to see more of this year and why?
G: We just like watching people have fun on stage, not overthinking it – that’s all that matters!
What festivals are you guys planning on heading to this year?
T: Improvengers Assemble will be at Edinburgh Fringe and we’re not sure what else after that.
What advice would you give for people thinking about starting an improv troupe themselves?
J: Just find people that you have fun with.
G: And hang out with each other, you need to be friends.
What is the best thing about a night for the audience?
G: The mistakes. If they wanted something polished, they’d go watch a play.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
G&J: @JULcomedy on all the social medias
T: @NoiseNextDoor
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
UNLEASH YOUR GEEK!
QUICK FIRE ROUND
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?
J: Moisturiser (Aloe Vera is best)
If you could trade lives with anyone for a day who would it be and why?
