Nostalgic Nineties – Furbys

They were the number one present for christmas, they were the toy that everyone wanted, they were so popular they also sold out everywhere. The Furby – the robotic like creature that made a comeback in recent years but in the nineties everyone wanted one – including myself.

They were everywhere – they were advertised constantly on television and as well as being a must have toy, MacDonalds even sold mini beanie baby versions of the Owl-Like creature. I depserately wanted one – they were like no other thing that was out there – they were so unique and they were also so damn cute.

When I got one for Christmas that year I was over the moon – my Furby was light grey with black dots and a light pink belly – his name  was Akay and he was amazing. He made me laugh so much and that Christmas we put him on top of the television to see him ‘dance’ to the music on Top of The Pops – he didn’t dance to everything – he fell asleep to Cher as he found it boring (and obviously did not believe in life after love).

So what made the Furby so special? I used to love being able to feed him by sticking my finger in its mouth, I used to love it’s cheers when you swung it around in the air, I loved learning the furby language and i loved stroking it. They also could communicate with each other!

Here is some of the translations of the Furby language (this is off of Wikipedia I do not remember it to this day)

  • wee-tah-kah-loo-loo: Tell me a joke.
  • wee-tah-kah-wee-loo: Tell me a story.
  • wee-tee-kah-wah-tee: Sing me a song.
  • u-nye-loo-lay-doo?: Do you want to play?
  • u-nye-ay-tay-doo?: Are you hungry?
  • u-nye-boh-doo?: How are you?
  • u-nye-way-loh-nee-way: Go to sleep now.
  • u-nye-noh-lah: Show me a dance.

I have recently read into the world of Furbies and they sold 27 million in a 12 month period – that is crazy but it also shows you just how popular these little guys were! It caused parental fights when they sold out and caused a lot of anger too!

I have seen the new style Furbies and i do not like them – their new digital eyes freak the hell out of me. I loved Akay so much and I still have him in the attic somewhere – however he sadly broke when I was a kid as i fell on him by mistake – I was utterly distraught and to this day i still feel sorry for Akay.
