This week in the the run up to Christmas there are many shows for you to go and see with a festive twist but none of them will be like. Blind Date with a Twist! Mid-Winter Special. I caught up with Angela and Leanna to find out more about the show that is on the 21st December at 8pm at The Miller.
Hello girls Tell us all about your Christmas show!
Blind Date with a Twist is a game show based on the 90s TV classic Blind Date, where one contestant, picks one of three players, for love or friendship or possible both! But instead of answering questions they are given challenges, previous ones include the game Twister, Free the Jelly Baby and a licking competition to see who can finish the Twister ice lolly the fastest. The challenges in the winter solstices special will definitely have a festive feel to them!
Blind Date with a Twist is open to everyone to play! And is hosted by Mother Earth (Leanna Wigginton) and Mother Nature (Angela Pollard). Everyone is encouraged to dress up and prizes will be given for best festive wear!
How did this show come about?
As part of our monthly night at the Canal Café Theatre the ‘Sandy & Danni Improv Show’ we would warm up the audience with fun silly party games. It was great way for us to get to know our audience and for them to get to know each other. It made the atmosphere feel like you were at a festival. And we both love festivals!
What’s the best thing about doing a Christmas show?
We love doing Christmas shows! It’s like throwing a big fun party! Also the festive season is a lovely time of year when people want to help others. Which is why our Christmas shows profit’s always go to charity. The charity we are raising money is Beatson Cancer Charity, based in Glasgow. They do an incredible job of helping those fighting cancer and offer an amazing amount of support for their patients and their family and friends. It’s a charity we hold close to our hearts and really hope we raise a good chunk of money for them.
How did you come up with the concept?
We had a section in our ‘Sandy & Danni Improv Show’ where we would find a person who was single in the audience and bring them on stage and find out a bit about them. Then on each table there were wooing envelopes and the rest of the audience would make something out of whatever they had to woo the single person on stage. It was so fun to see what people came up with! And it always made the person on stage feel special and loved. Sandy and Danni show was always about finding love. Blind Date with a Twist is basically a bigger version of this section with wackier hosts.
What’s the best advice you have ever been given about improv?
Own it! If you fart on stage, stay to smell it! hahahaha basically don’t run away from your choices you’ve made in a scene.
What’s some of the highlights of past shows you have done?
Making crazy costumes and making up new games! But one of the biggest highlights was in our first Blind Date with a Twist – Valentine’s Day special, one of our audience members had just moved to London and decided to come on her own to our show after seeing it in Time Out. Not only did she participate on stage and won the heart of the contestant but she made a bunch of new friends that night! People often say London can be lonely place and Blind Date with a Twist is here to help break that notion.
What does 2018 hold for you guys?
Hopefully more Blind Date with a Twist shows! But also, we have our biggest Leanna and Angela Present project a new web series called ‘Unicorn Guardians’. It’s a web series which takes place at the Edinburgh Fringe festival book ended with episodes in London. We will be filming, editing and releasing the episodes during the festival. Eek! It’s a big exciting project and are currently organising our crowd funder campaign to help us get it off the page.
