How Improv Changed Our Lives

How improv changed my life – people watching

If there is one thing I have always loved doing, it’s getting a good coffee or a decent hot chocolate (both with marshmallows if the coffee is a mocha) sitting in a coffee shop and people watch. I love it – people do some really amazing actions, especially in cities. When the world is crazy and everyone is rushing at the same speed it’s nice to take a step back and look at the people around you and what they are doing.

Before I did improv, it was something I would do just for the hell of it and the sort of have some time out from the hustle and bustle of life. However since I have started studying comedy I find it a fascinating way to come up with ideas for characters.

There is nothing better then looking at someone and taking note of their characteristics and keeping them tucked away for another time performing comedy. Sometimes it can be a huge characteristic such as the way they move, the way they talk and other times it can be little things such as the way they hold their cup of the way they hold their phone.

Performing shows and even rehearsing you want to have a whole batch of characters to try out and see if they work and sometimes coming up with these little quirks can really develop a person or a scene.

I find that this makes people watching more fun and also helps me develop as an improviser.

It’s great to come up with new characters and also it makes having a coffee more interesting to do.
