The music video is something that fans and audiences look at to see their favorite band or stars in a different light as well as watch to see how a band have used it to depict a song. There has many videos that have been remade though in the process, whether its to re-visit an idea in a different way, the original video was too commercial or the song was remixed, or to create an important message, there are many reasons why a music video was remade and we are going to look at some examples today.
Blink-182 – She’s Out Of Her Mind
The most recent single of Blink-182 is a gender swap remake of the hit music video What’s My Age Again. The original music video was iconic and lead to more of a popularity boost to the man as they are running around town naked, however the new video see the roles reversed and its women doing it. Whilst the original was something out of the ordinary the new video could be seen as lazy or a tad sexist, as like we have stated in the Women Vs The Remake article, using a woman in this way could be seen just as a money making tool. Also it is not the first time that Blink have remade this video as they already for the video Man Overboard so it could be seen as Lazy marketing. The only reason the first one was such a success was it was out of the ordinary, naked women are always used a lot more then men in music videos, film etc so it completely contradicts what the original video stood for.
Britney Spears – Make Me
Britney’s come back single had to have two videos made as the first video the record label felt was too risqué for singer like Britney Spears. The original music video leaked online and was rejected for Britney being too ‘sexy’. They released another music video in replace of it which received overwhelmingly negative reactions from the fans and a petition was set up to release the original video. The Director of the original music video David LaChapelle commented saying the video wasn’t suitable for the song. Britneys manager said that the reason that the original video was pulled was “It’s really simple. The video just didn’t work […] because it’s Britney there are all kinds of conspiracies. Nobody is hiding anything.”
Spice Girls – Wannabe
The music video for Wannabe was remade by The Global Goals to advocate for gender equality. Girls and women from countries from all over the world sing and dance along to wannabe. The video ends with the message Girl Power goes global to achieve global Goals. The video went viral and even got a stamp of approval from Victoria Beckham and other spice girls.
The Wanted – Walks Like Rihanna
There are many bands that have done parodies before and their have been many taking the micky out of boy band videos (one of the most iconic being Blink-182 All The Small Things) however, in recent years the fad has come round yet again. The Wanted did a music video for Walks Like Rihanna where they remade parts of N*Sync, Backstreet Boys and Take That Videos as part of their music video, maybe it was to make a really random song more interesting or to play on something that is so iconic to fans of pop.
