Back at the end of August an IG friend of mine, @thegeekofsteel, challenged me to try out Geeky September; a daily photo challenge centred around general geekyness, with each day having a particular focus. Of course, being the giant nerd that I am, I jumped at the chance to share even more of my geekiness with the world, and so I set about deciding on what to include. Read on to see days1-8 of the challenge and find out some of the reasoning behind my choices. Enjoy…
Day One – Something Super
This was my profile picture on Plenty of Fish, a dating website here in the UK, back in 2013. I remember choosing it at the time, thinking ” if a guy or girl doesn’t get my geeky side, then they are not for me”. After a few disastrous dates I got a message from a guy whose profile was all about his geeky quirks. That guy turned out to be the love of my life, who’s best friend told me not long ago that it was the Superman T shirt in my pic that sold him on messaging me. So for me this pic is definitely something SUPER.
Day Two – A Book
For those of you who watch my channel, it will come as no surprise that I chose one of the Witcher books for this category. I am mildly, aka totally, obsessed with the Witcher franchise and seeing as the world was born of the brilliant mind of Andrzej Sapkowski I decided to check out his book series. The Last Wish was the first I read however I now realise that it is a prequel to the original series. I am so glad I read it first though because it opened up the world giving greater detail that helped me understand character motivation in both the later books and in the games. It also provided me such joy as a veteran of the games to be able to meet certain characters for the true first time, and to find out what they are really driven by.
Day Three – A Director
This beautiful soul gave me my first love affair with anime back when I was a kid, after I watched Laputa Castle in the Sky at the age of 7. Hayao Miyazaki to me is the greatest director of all time. His vision and passion opened my eyes to a truly magical plethora of worlds in which Trolls befriend children, little girls can save the adults for once, fires have souls and love defeats death. He is a true artist whose work I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Day Four – A Movie
Following on from day three I decided to pick Grave of the Fireflies as my movie choice. In truth I have five top films and it is really hard to place them, however I figured that this stunning piece of art does not get enough recognition, whereas everybody and their uncle knows about The Shawshank Redemption.
GotF is a beautiful tale of a brother and his little sister struggling to survive in a war torn Japan. This was the the first Studio Ghibli movie I had seen that was not set in a magical world with talking animals or evil witches, and so I didn’t know if I would enjoy it. But, hand on heart, I can honestly say I have never finished a movie in such awe as I did the first time I saw this masterpiece. It is honestly the most heart wrenching moving you will ever see and if you don’t feel something for these characters then you are straight up made of stone.
Day Five – A Character
This was a tough one. As a nerd I live in other worlds, filled with exciting, funny, caring, sexy, witty characters. How the heck was I supposed to settle on just one? In the end I decided to go for the character that reminded me of my Ad. Shikamaru from the Naruto universe is handsome, has a dry wit, is lazy yet is always there for those he loves, all things which perfectly sum up my gorgeous man Ad.
Day Six – A Villain
Now don’t get me wrong I love the Joker and Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor kicked ass but for me Mayor Richard Wilkins the Third is by far the best villain. He made season three of Buffy the Vampire Slayer both hilarious and terrifying in equal measures. A true legend in the villain world. What BTVS fan doesn’t love the Mayor?
Day Seven – A Mode of Transport
No prizes for anyone who guessed my pick for this category. Roach from the Witcher 3, never has a horse been so beloved and hated at the same time. You get me from one side of the map to the other in no time at all, you come to me in Novigrad when I call even though I left you in Skellige, you run along a path without direction from me and I love you for these reasons, but WHY do you keep getting stuck on the scenery!?!?!?!? Argh!
Day Eight – A Sequel
I remember watching The Dark Knight in the cinema with a huge Joker like grin on my face, beaming with DC fan girl pride. Nolan knocked it outta the park in every way possible. TDK is not only a great comic book movie but a great movie full stop. A true masterpiece in film making, let alone a good sequel.
To be continued …
