Comedy Book Corner -David Mitchell, Thinking About It Only Makes It Worse

If you are a fan of David Mitchells YouTube channel called Soapbox, then this book will be right up your street. It is a little bit outdated now as it is a book full of his articles that he has written over the years for the Observer newspaper. He does at the beginning of each chapter go into detail as to what the articles will be about and what was happening at the time when he wrote the article.

If you are a fan of Davids dark and to the point humour then this is a book that you will thoroughly enjoy as he rants on about his opinions left right and centre. If you are looking for a book that is more light hearted that is not focussed on politics and society then you should stay away from this book as you may find it heavy going and quite hard to read and enjoy.

As a book it is an entertaining read however to really enjoy the humour that is created from each article you should really read it from start to finish and not pause in between and walk away and come back to it later. If you do this to an article, you can return and forget what the subject was about and lose the momentum of the article and how it as originally intended.

If you are looking for a book with a constant flow throughout then it may not be the one for you as the topics even though divided into chapters are all very different and do not follow a constant topic but that is because they were written for a newspaper and have all been collated together.

Throughout, there is italic text, which is from David informing the audience as to why the article was written and what was happening in the news. The stories are a little outdated as they are from the early 2010s so it can be a bit hard to read at times but it is also entertaining because of the David Mitchell-isms throughout.

Overall, if you are looking for a light hearted, topical piece of writing then this is a book that you will enjoy as it is a bit like Have I Got News For You mixed into a bunch of articles. If you are looking for something a bit more light hearted – then stay clear.

Readability Rating – 5/10
