It is a great place to discover new up and coming talent, especially for the comedy world – it can introduce you to an array of brand new acts to watch out for. This week I had the chance to chat to the two women behind the brand new online comedy series – It’s Kate show. I sat down with Kate Dauphin, originally from Ohio who moved to Los Angeles four years ago to persue a career in acting and stand up comedy.  She is the actress who plays Kate Show (as well as writing, producing directing and editing).

I also caught up with her co-creator of Kate Show, Marina Coria who is a native of Los Angeles and works as a make up artist in the Film and TV industry. For Kate Show she writes, produces and Directs the show.

Hey Girls – so, how did you come up with the concept of It’s Kate Show?

Kate Dauphin: Kate Show was a character I created one day on Vine. I was taking improv classes at the Groundlings School and exploring different characters at the time. I loved the idea of someone having her own show who is really awkward and uncomfortable on camera, but insists on doing it. As I began creating Kate Show Vines more regularly, Marina would help me think of ideas and film things for me on occasion. We both started taking it a little more seriously and decided to take it to the next level with a web series.

Marina Coria: Kate and I were flying back from a trip to Spain and on the flight back we outlined and figured out we were going to turn the small videos into a full web series.

KD: we’d had a few glasses of wine and felt unstoppable.

Tell us about your webispodes on Youtube? What are they are about?

MC: Hey It’s Kate Show is a talk show with Kate Show as the host. She’s just a girl living her dreams trying to get the info to the people!

KD: It’s not a traditional talk show- we do some sit down interviews but also some interviews of real people on the streets, as well as makeup tutorials, cooking segments, and more! We were inspired by shows like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and PeeWee’s Playhouse. Real mature stuff.

“I wouldn’t be working with her if I didn’t think she was hilarious. I think the comedy world needs more female comedy role models and I think she’s it!!!” – Marina on Kate

Whats been your favourite episode to film so far and why?

KD: Definitely the episode about my mother! My mom is SO FUNNY and is the one who gave me my wacky sense of humor. I found cheap flights home and on a whim, Marina and I decided to fly home to film with my mom! She was in an Instagram video with Kate Show and all my friends loved it, so we knew it would be gold. Plus we shot in Ohio in the snow! Marina and I got to play in the snow all weekend and film in the natural light and everything just turned out so great.

MC: Hey It’s Kate Show goes home! By far this is my favorite episode. I am a native of Los Angeles so I always get to show Kate the rad things about the city I grew up in. It was such an awesome experience going to Ohio to visit where kate grew up and have her show me where she grew up.

I think it gave a breath of life mid season! New environment and of course Kate’s mom Kathy is HILARIOUS!! Plus they have cheese balls in Ohio and I had never had one, and let me tell you- if you haven’t had a cheese ball you are missing out in life.

KD: They have cheeseballs in Los Angeles also.

You have had such a positive response to shows – how do you feel with this?

KD: Terrific! We have decided that, first and foremost, Marina and I make the show for ourselves. We want to enjoy the process and the outcome, and hopefully that shows and makes it enjoyable for others too. So now that we’re seeing that it does, it’s a fantastic feeling!

MC: It kind of feels like Kate Show the character is mine and Kate’s little baby, so I’m happy people like her!

What is the hardest thing about producing a successful comedy show online?

MC: The hardest thing is getting a following. Kate and I always said the number one priority is to have FUN while we do this but of course you want engagement, and for me that’s the hardest part. Navigating the social media aspect has been the hardest for me. Thankfully Kate is stronger at this than me and takes the wheel when it comes to the social media side!

KD: Yes, promoting the show is tough. I kind of hate posting about it all over social media, 1, because it’s hard to keep track of everything. We have learned that scheduling when and what we’re posting is really helpful. And 2, because I often feel like I’m annoying people. But I guess I’m learning to get used to that. Marina says “you’re not annoying anyone until they tell you you’re annoying them,” or something like that.

Season 1 is almost at a close? What does season 2 have in store?

MC: We were talking about season 2 before we even started filming season 1! I think Kate Show is really coming into her own and might push boundaries a little bit more!

KD: Because Kate Show is a little inexperienced in life, the possibilities are endless! We want her to experience things! Like maybe dating.

“My mom is SO FUNNY and is the one who gave me my wacky sense of humor.” – kate

Who are your comedy influences and why?

Danny Kaye

MC: I like silly and weird! Danny Kaye is probably one of my favorite comedians of all time. He’s silly and goofy and his physical comedy is on point. He has facial expressions I can often see in Kate’s face and it’s priceless. I also recently really got into Eric Andre. I love how weird he is. I love weird and sometimes I know I can get too weird and thankfully I have Kate there to tell me. And lastly Kate Dauphin! I wouldn’t be working with her if I didn’t think she was hilarious. I think the comedy world needs more female comedy role models and I think she’s it!!!

Kristan Wiig

KD: Okay well that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. THANKS MARINA. Really though, Marina and I work so well together comedically and I absolutely could not do this show without her. She pushes me out of my comfort zone and takes me to very weird places. In the best way. I am a huge fan of Kristen Wiig and all the characters she morphs into. I love Michaela Watkins too. And Kristen Schaal. And Abby & Ilana from Broad City! Basically I just really love smart, weird women.

So what  does the future hold for Hey It’s Kate show?

MC: Well we are definitely doing a second season and a few specials will be released in between! Kate Show as a lot up her sleeve so stay tuned!

Any last words for our readers?

Thanks so much for watching Season One and keep an eye out for Season Two! Oh, and I LOVE YOU! – Kate Show
