Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of McFly and their videos. When I was a kid, their music videos were always on television and some of them are really good and they deserve to be in the limelight. So this month we are celebrating the wonders of this creative band.

That Girl – McFly

Why did you choose this particular video?

I felt I had to write about this video because it was always on music channels when I was younger. I have seen it so many times and felt I had to write about it. It is a video that has a sense of American to it as well as comedy.

So, what is the narrative?

The band work at a garage and a girl turns up with a problem with her car. All the band take turns trying to impress her and then she turns up to the garage again with her boyfriend.

Favourite parts of the video

One thing the edit brings out is the comedy in the music video. There are so many elements of the song where the guys try and show off to the girl and they do this with a simple edit. Also there is a part where all the music goes silent so Tom is singing on the mic out of tune.

When it is on the part of the music video where the narrative is happening, the colour grade makes it obvious with this distinctive blue colour. It works really well and it also heightens the comedy of the video, it is a simple yet clever way to divide the performance from the story.

There are some really fun camera angles in this video as well that brings pace to the edit and also makes the whole video an enjoyable experience. The camera angles also have a feel of American to them and I wonder if it is to try and break the American market.
