Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
Our latest single is “Problem Attic,” a song about dark thoughts relating to self, others, and society at large. This person is clearly having a tough time.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
“My mind’s a problem attic, lotsa static, lotsa dust. Need some moral fabric to wipe up the lust.” AND “Being right’s overrated. We’re only here to be satiated.”
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
“The City” was one of the first songs we played as a band. The music and lyrics capture the grit of The Spent Priests. It’s about going out, drinking, smoking, and generally getting into trouble. “I love the city and the city loves me. When I’m around, it’s gonna be ace. Drink up the vibe, get smashed in the face.”
Your favourite song to play live:
“Let’s Go” is a fave at every show, a cautionary tale of staying clear of an angry, knife-wielding girlfriend. It’s pounding from the start, energetic. A sweaty mess by the time it’s over, you know, like mandatory driving music.
Our closer is a fun one too; it’s called “It Was Over” and our fans like to sing the “Sun’s out, bun’s out” chorus with us.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
“Redemption” took a bit to get right. The different parts eventually fit together nicely. You can tell it’s The Spent Priests, but it’s a little different for us in some ways. Still dark, but also hopeful.
Soon to be recorded is a controversial (possible) anthem about billionaires called “St. Luigi.” The structure of the song is not exactly traditional, so it took a minute to get all the parts right. People will certainly be able to relate to this one.
One of your previous tracks you would recommend for first time listeners of your music and why?
“There Will Be Blood” is a great way to get started with The Spent Priests. Also an early one for the band, intense guitar supported by pounding bass and drums. The subject of this song has seen better days, going through pain and torment.
Dream collaboration:
Frank Black is a genius in so many ways, not that we sound like him or The Pixies, but because he approaches songwriting in a way that has always grabbed us- eclectic and unconventional. Emotion first, structure later.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
“Did I bring an extra shirt to change into?” We love playing shows. We think about the crowd and giving them the most intense, cathartic experience possible.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Books to read, notebooks to write in, pens, deodorant.
Describe your fans in three words:
fun, super-supportive, freak-friendly, hardworking, passionate, discerning. That’s more than three, sorry, we really like them.
A song released in the last few years by an artist or band you wish you had written:
“Cheeky Bastard” by The Scratch pokes fun at an Oasis-loving, drunk wanker. It gets me every time. “Backfoot” by Dinosaur Pile-Up is also a great one because the guitars are huge and it’s about not giving an F*** about what people think about you.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
Shows! Look for The Spent Priests in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and New Jersey soon. We’re mixing and developing videos for a few recently recorded tracks called “I Don’t Wanna,” “House on Fire,” and “Take The Bait.”
On the way are new guitar driven songs about inner demons, degenerate gamblers, billionaires, namedroppers and story toppers. We seem to be in a really good place creatively right now.
There’s a couple of older songs we’ve been meaning to record, but the three of us are coming up with some really great ideas for new tracks as we speak.
