Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of No Doubt. They are such an iconic pop punk band and also the feminine power that Gwen Stefani has is also a reason why they are such a fantastic band with some great music. Their music videos are really interesting and have some really great edit choices which is why I wanted to do a whole 5 weeks of them!

Trapped In A Box – No Doubt

Why did you choose this particular video?

I am not a fan of this song bur I thought it would be fun to look at a really old school No Doubt track. This video has a nostalgic feel of that era and is very different to their more stylised videos.

So, what is the narrative?

It is all focussed on the television and uses it in different ways to relate to the lyrics. It also does full circle where the old man watches television at the end and at the beginning.

Favourite parts of the video

It is filmed and edited very much like a home movie, so it has this real sense of movement to it. The camera pans a lot and the edits are very quick at times. The movement has a sense of making you feel uneasy whilst also embracing the rustic.

There are a few video effects that are used throughout such as fades, bright lights and essences of lens blurs that create this real trippy feeling to the video which I suppose was used as methods to get the band noticed.

Colour grade is more focussed on the lights on the actual set then in the edit which makes it really impressive and again gives it this really old fashioned, authentic feel.
