Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of No Doubt. They are such an iconic pop punk band and also the feminine power that Gwen Stefani has is also a reason why they are such a fantastic band with some great music. Their music videos are really interesting and have some really great edit choices which is why I wanted to do a whole 5 weeks of them!

Bathwater – No Doubt

Why did you choose this particular video?

No Doubt have some really interesting videos and again this one where dancing plays an important part. It is one of those videos that has so much to see, you just have to keep watching it on repeat.

So, what is the narrative?

This video is more of a performance base, so it is more about the edit, the colour grade and the dancing that really bring this to life.

Favourite parts of the video

Let’s start within something that we haven’t really spoken about for a couple of weeks – the editing techniques. There are a lot of fun choices in the video. One of the ones that stands out is the split screen, that is used throughout the video. It is bold colours that define the split screens. There are edit shakes throughout, quick edit changes between different coloured shots which work really well.

I love the colour grade in this video, it is so bold, punchy and clashes so much that it works so well. You have bright red and green, softened light, glitzy, black and white overexposed – it is really creative and works really well.

The variety of shots in this music video makes it work so well visually. It makes it striking, punky and has a sense of strong femininty and just a lot of fun.
