Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of No Doubt. They are such an iconic pop punk band and also the feminine power that Gwen Stefani has is also a reason why they are such a fantastic band with some great music. Their music videos are really interesting and have some really great edit choices which is why I wanted to do a whole 5 weeks of them!
Hey Baby – No Doubt
Why did you choose this particular video?
This was such an iconic music video when I was a kid. It has that feminine, punk feel that you wanted from bands like No Doubt in the noughties. It is a video that is so striking and it came onto the scene really pushing its way into peoples enjoyment and popularity.
So, what is the narrative?
The band go to a night club and they watch lots of girls and guys having a great time and hitting on each other.
Favourite parts of the video

The graphics are the star of the show – they are bold, punchy and absolutely everywhere. At the beginning you are welcomed with the lyrics appearing on the screen when they are sung. The thing that is so clever is the text of the album are on the bus and Gwen’s clothes so it brings the graphics into the whole video on a completely different level. Also, there is a lot of green screen used throughout that also create major effects.

The colour grade is striking – faded yellow and greens are used in the shots to make the red of the album cover, Gwen Stefani’s lipstick and trousers really stand out. It creates a sense of punkiness whilst also emphasising the boldness.

Many editing techniques were used throughout to create major impact. The fast edits, the slow motion and reverse shots make this video stand out and work so well as it has so much pace.
