Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of The Prodigy’s music. I grew up with their music and their style was so iconic that they really stood out. Some of their videos are phenomenal and I realised there was a lot of them I had not watched so I thought it would be good to take a look at this month.

Why did you choose this particular video?

This is one of my favourite The Prodigy songs and I had never seen the video so thought it was time I actually watched the music video. I am so glad I did as it is such a random video which is what you expect from this video.

So, what is the narrative?

I am not really sure what the narrative is but I know that the dance plays a huge colour. Since it is the nineties, the dance scene I assume there is a metaphor to drugs. There is a lot of aliens and spaceships as well.

Favourite parts of the video

The edit is madness which goes with the chaos of the song. The thing that stands out is the colour changes throughout – it goes inverted and bright colours in the whole video which is a bit crazy but weirdly goes really well with the song.

There are some really interesting transitions throughout that predominantly happens when the song style changes. There is a ripped up paper one, flashes, split screens, random squiggles. There is even a random what I am going to call ‘boing’ effect that also happens in time to the music and it looks like jelly. This all is really random but does not feel out of place.

The dancing. We have to talk about the dancing. It feels like it sets the tempo for the video and sort of dictates the transitions as the dancing is a huge part of the video. Very clever, very effective.
