It’s September again which is what I like to say is a new improv season, I don’t know why, I think it’s because the improv classes I used to go to always started a new season at this time of year like school (or more realistic the summer after the festivals).
I think when it comes to this time of year, it is important to focus on one thing – the basics. So all this month we are going to look at different areas and how they can be used and developed.
I am not a teacher but I have learnt so much from others so let’s try and bring important things to light that stuck with me that may be able to help you in the future.
One word
One basic skill that is a great warm up game, performance game and even a helpful one to get you understanding the dynamics of improv is one word at a time.
What is so good about it?
There are so many levels in which you can play this game – I have even seen some of the best improvisers in the world play it and it always has hilarious results.
The thing that is great about One Word at a time is that it can really help even the most nervous improvisers relax. It is one word you have to think of – that is it!
It is a game that is great for developing into a more complex concept and it can also bring the whole group of players together in a collaborative way!
Ways to play
There are so many ways to play this as well. When your first start out in improv it is used as a way to get you understanding the dynamics, trying to train you not to think ahead. It also makes all improvisers perform at the same level.
You can then play it as a two headed expert in a show format or even make it competitive, fast paced warm up gam, when you have to say things as quick as possible. The great thing about this game is that the possibilities are endless as it is so versatile.
How to make it more complex
There are so many ways to make things more challenging – one way could be to add rules such as no S words, no hesitations etc.
Another way to make all of the words of one person song titles! Now that is a challenge! I used to play this and it is tough and fun at the same time.
