It is August which only means one thing – it is Camden Fringe time! Over the next few weeks we are chatting to acts that are performing at the festival and finding all about their show and what they would call this years iconic Camden Fringe Pigeon! Today we find out about the show Superagent

How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
We’d heard the phrase ‘Superagent’ being thrown about by various people over the years (for a show all about the acting industry, our cast of course has to be made up of long-suffering, haggard actors). We found it oddly hilarious how Marvel-esque this expression was – ‘Superagent’ – that one potential person could rescue any actor spinning down the drain and make their lives whole again. We wanted to explore what this type of powerful being can do to any creative working in the 21st century. Each of the four people in the dressing room explores a different obstacle one might face trying to make art in the hellscape that is our modern age.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
It’s a black comedy/murder mystery, which means lots of dark jokes to get the conversation started. If you’re worried about the narcissism that might come with a group of actors writing a play about acting – we roast the s*** out of the industry and the players in it.
Not only are we self-aware, but we come at it from an intense love of the craft. The cast and crew behind Superagent all met doing amateur dramatic shows after our 9-to-5s were over for the day, and it is the best way to make friends and do creative stuff. We love the style of ‘The Studio’ from Apple TV, and emulated that same vibe for SuperAgent – taking a comical yet critical eye to the acting industry, as ‘The Studio’ did for the film industry.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
We’ve all been very intrigued to watch ‘Friends Help You Move’ by Yeah Yeah Productions – it is also a black comedy mixed with murder and revenge (so immediately right up our alley) and sounds hilarious. ‘God save the Queen!’ seems utterly bonkers so we’ll all defo be there. We love drag.
How are rehearsals going?
Really great, we’re giddy about getting started. We’re in early stages, having smaller rehearsals on one-to-one scenes before the bigger cast come together. We are all great friends, and met at Questors Theatre in Ealing over the years in different shows. There’s nothing that’ll bond you quite like am-dram theatre. Our characters are so fun to explore in the space. We love writing deeply twisted individuals masquerading as everyday folk, and this is choc-a-bloc full of characters just like that. Everyone has something to hide in this story – but don’t we all?
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
The SuperAgent crew have been living and working in London for years, and being fans of theatre have of course heard and attended many Camden Fringe festivals. As a born and bred Londoner myself, I made it a goal to participate in as much of the London theatre scene as I can, so this is truly a bucket list moment. You can feel it in the air at the fringe- artsy people from all over the capital coming together to celebrate the stage. It’s f******* sick.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
My main piece of advice would be don’t underestimate the kindness of strangers. We set up a GoFundMe to help with our fees for the show, and maxed out our goal within a couple of months. We never imagined this would happen, but people really want to help you out if they can – I even asked for £1 donations to help us over the top. So try not to be cynical about setting up a fundraiser. I was, and was pleasantly humbled by the experience.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Honestly, the irony of having our audience filled up with casting agents and directors, watching a show about a SuperAgent, would be incredible. Hopefully they will like our jokes, and sign all of us immediately. Sigh.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Well, the pigeon is wearing a cool-ass leather jacket in a lot of the Camden Fringe promo, so maybe Danny Poo-ko. Cause pigeons poop a lot… I promise our jokes are better in the show, that’s a guarantee.
