It is festival season and that means that in the next month there is so many great comedy festivals to look forward to! This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. The Nearly Naked Show has been described as ‘A Mighty Boosh and Leigh Bowery mash-up’ which I’ll take! It’s full of guts and glitter and it’s a fantastical freak show and reclamation of my naked body in all its gory glory. A sticky mush of cabaret, drag, performance art and alternative comedy I take the audience on a journey through the universe of Fanny Bleach’s mind, in to all it’s creepiest corners and crevices, including a life drawing class, bizarre projections of prawn stars and one breasted convicts and absolute bangers which will hopefully make everyone want to join the party. 

Fanny is a cartoonish chameleon, adopting personas as readily as new costumes, yet the piece itself was born from defiance. It begins here, buckle up…

I had a dream one night that my fanny sang ‘I Did It My Way’… At the time I was involved in an investigation at my old drama school, I’d made a complaint about a director who, whilst under his care abused his power and made me and my classmates do things that would shock even the most unshockable… Unknowingly it shaped my early career, my work ethic and my constant need to please by pushing myself and my own boundaries for what!? Old perverted men with boring ideas. So after my fanny dream, and some therapy I realised I needed to do it my way. Initially planned as a one off, and a Fuck You to him and to every other man whose made me feel small or like my body wasn’t mine, however after such a great response it felt like The Nearly Naked Show’s life lived on past the sticky floors of The Divine, maybe it had legs. Big hairy slippery legs.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

God I haven’t even had a chance to think about that yet!? Obviously all the other Bighead Comedy lot, hopefully our gigs don’t clash too much! I always love seeing some dance and circus too and will of course be getting as much use out of my Assembly Rooms pass and seeing absolutely everything free.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I have! I did it when I was 19 as part of Your Aunt Fanny, the all female comedy sketch group I am still a part of, and again in 2022 with the same lasses! I think it’s really important to find time to be alone, sharing a two bed with 6 other women is in the same breath magical and intense as f***. I needed to go on walks and to go to see things on my own, just to be with my own thoughts for a minute.Although

Although this year I’m going to be completely alone and I know I will be dying to have company round me as much as possible so I don’t go mad. I’ve heard some good advice from Sophie Willan, saying forget about the reviewers if you can and who you need to get in the room with, just try and enjoy it and remember why you’re there in the first place. 

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I imagine I will be waking up late after finishing at 10.50pm, the comedown after that will be a lot so I hope my body lets me lie in for once. Then coffee, some kind of war time oaty breakfast to save money. Then hopefully head out and see what I can before I head back and agonise over my own show. 

I know I’ll find it hard to relax and enjoy myself to begin with but I’m hoping after a few shows I can settle in to it. I’ll definitely need at least one pint after every show and I refuse to apologise for it. Wake up, eat, watch, agonise, stress, try and eat, stress, perform, drink. Repeat probably.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

The original Mosque Kitchen for sure. I eat there so much during the Fringe, you can get a plate of 3 different veggie curries for like 6 quid and samosas are 50p! 

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Last time it was being with Your Aunt Fanny for a whole month, doing what we did best every single night. It felt jammy as f***. This time I’m not sure yet, but I’m hoping I get to see loads and loads of stuff and give me a bit of a creativity boost for my own show each night.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

I have this pretty big crochet sloth that my mate made me at uni, it’s my emotional support sack of s*** now. It has no eyes or nose or mouth but when I wake up it’s arms still manage to wrap around me. 

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

Again…It’s got to be Mosque Kitchen. It’s so tasty and quick and cheap. And when you’re spending literally all your money on pints every night it’s a God send.

If you’re performing then make use of all the free tickets you’ll get from the theatre your show is with. Also Wetherspoons, terrible I know.
