It is festival season and that means that in the next month there is so many great comedy festivals to look forward to! This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. My show is called ‘The Mermaid’ and it’s about…mermaids. Well, sort of. It’s about mermaids and being a girl in the mid 2000s. It’s a heady mix of folklore, mythology, Shout magazine, speculation on James Cameron’s love life and  deep dives into chronically online topics like Rat Boy Summer and Hear Me Out Cakes

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Sooo many! Everyone at Monkey Barrel is a guaranteed delight. Sooz Kempner is always an excellent choice. Ben Alborough if you want something silly and chaotic. I do love a bit of Shakespeare For Breakfast because I’m a youth theatre kid at heart and I love a free croissant. 

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe. 

I’ve done the Fringe too many times before. This will be my 16th! My tips are – don’t beat yourself up if you’re not loving every minute, it’s a whole month of your life and you’re guaranteed to have a little therapeutic cry at some point. 

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I love doing early shows, mine’s at 1pm so I can get my normal person activities (gym, dentist, food shop) in in the morning. I will maybe take in one (two at a push) shows in the afternoon, but I find I’m a tired and grumpy audience member if I try and pack too much in. In the evening I will make extravagant plans to go for cocktails with comedian friends I haven’t seen for months, and then go home instead and watch YouTube. 

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe? 

Pablo Eggsgobao usually have a stand in George square and their breakfast baos make me cry with happiness. 

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Being able to make and perform for a full month with other people who love comedy. 

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

I am at home – I live in Edinburgh and it’s where I’m originally from, so I’m very lucky, I get to sleep in my own bed in my own flat. I like to escape town and see my ‘normal’ friends and family on my days off, because the Fringe can be quite overwhelming. 

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

I think the very best hack is don’t do the Fringe, but I do recommend going to as many events with free bars and food as possible. Bleed them dry.
