It is festival season and that means that in the next month there is so many great comedy festivals to look forward to! This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. So take note because we are going to give you all the information you need for just a handful of some of the great shows happening this year!

We want to keep some aspects of ‘Redacted’ well…redacted, so no spoilers here. What we can tell you is that ‘Redacted’ is what you would get if you mixed Fargo with The Office and added a sprinkling of James Bond and No Country For Old Men. ‘Redacted’ takes place in the 1970’s in the American southwest, and it follows journalist Marnie Mackowski as she tries to unravel a series of decades-spanning conspiracies. There’s live music, physical theatre, and lots of laughs. Highlights include a knife fight in a meat freezer, a moon landing that doesn’t quite resemble what you’ve seen on TV, and helicopter and ski chase on the side of a glacier.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m really looking forward to seeing the shows I haven’t heard of yet, but a few that I know I’ll want to catch are:
“Whatever Happened To That Guy?” – Maybe You Like It
“Shakespeare Dice: As You Like It”- Dacha Theatre
“Dracula” – Plexus Polaire
“The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much” – Voloz Collective (yes, that’s a completely shameless plug for our other show that we’ll be doing everyday in Pleasance Forth)
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
Yes, this will be our third fringe as a company. Our advice would be:
- Don’t sweat the small stuff- no single review, performance, or weird flyering interaction is going to determine the value of your show or your fringe experience.
- Don’t overdo it- we tend to see 1-2 other shows max a day so that we have plenty of time to rest and recharge.
- Do go see small random shows outside of the big four venues from unknown companies that haven’t been reviewed.
- Do actually engage in conversation with people you flyer AND people who flyer you. I’ve heard so many surprising and inspiring stories when I engage with people beyond just the initial elevator pitch.
- Do take an afternoon or two away from the festival and go to the ocean.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
8:00- Wake up, warm up, eat a banging breakfast, likely crack and buy an overpriced coffee.
10:10- Arrive at Pleasance Forth to set up, fight call/ sound check for The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much.
10:40 – Perform The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much
11:50- Load out, drink a few liters of water, grab our fliers and hit Pleasance courtyard and Bristo square. Flyer a bit, then eat lunch.
1:25 – Warm up, get into costume, sound check, and fight call for Redacted.
1:55 – Perform Redacted at Pleasance King Dome
2:55 – Drink a few liters of water, likely have a second lunch, then do some more flyering.
4:00 – 8 – See a show or two and cook and consume dinner.
10:00 – Stretch, read, debrief the day with the rest of the company.
11:00 – Get those zzzzzzz’s

Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Getting to do the show 27 times in a row and everything that teaches us about the show. Especially for a comedic shows, getting that volume of immediate audience feedback in a condensed time period is invaluable for honing jokes, characters, and timing.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Maple syrup from my neighbors in Vermont (pro tip- it’s great in coffee).
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
-Bring a travel mug and force yourself to make coffee in your flat instead of buying out.
-Always carry around nuts for on the go snacking.
-See the more expensive shows on the 2 for 1 days.
-See everything you possibly can on your venue pass.
