This month we are looking at some of the great shows that you can see at the Edinburgh Fringe. So take note because we are going to give you all the information you need for just a handful of some of the great shows happening this year!

Puttana is an experimental musical narrative work that puts in the witness stand not its protagonists, but the society that produced them: that same society that normalises the sexualisation of bodies through slogans advertising, consumption and everyday language, and then it hides the most uncomfortable consequences.

The trade follows the rules of any market — I pay, I can — but it remains hidden, never in broad daylight. A single actress on stage gives body to five different characters — Laura the student, the Prostitute, the Man, the Wife, the Young Man — each with their own story and their own needs. Their voices overlap and contradict each other, restoring the complexity of an experience that does not allow simple judgements. The show is reserved for an adult audience (+18) and it is used entirely in headphones.

Puttana is a theatre in headphones: each spectator wears one for the duration of the show. The soundscape is constructed through binaural audio technology, which positions the sounds in three-dimensional space by projecting the audience directly into the scene — in the room, in the bar, in Laura’s head. The actress is surrounded by microphones managed in real time, so that depending on the active microphone, the voice changes colour and presence, becoming a dramaturgical tool. Vocal alterations identify the characters and their inner states.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

The Fringe offers such a rich and diverse programme of shows and artists that it’s hard to choose! We’re currently exploring the different productions on offer, and we’ll try to see as many shows as possible. It’s a great opportunity not only to discover inspiring work, but also to meet, connect with, and exchange ideas with as many fellow artists and companies as we can.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe. 

We haven’t taken part in the Edinburgh Fringe before, but we have participated in the Fringe festivals in New York and Catania. One of the most important pieces of advice we would give is to have a strong promotional and communication strategy in place. Just as important is building relationships and creating a network with the many artists, companies, and organisations involved. Fringe festivals are not only about performing, but also about connecting, exchanging experiences, and growing together within an international artistic community.

If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?

We can’t wait to experience the unique energy of the Fringe, surrounded by artists from all over the world. We’re excited about spending our days immersed in art and creativity, meeting new people, building connections, and creating meaningful relationships and collaborations along the way.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Part of our day will definitely be dedicated to rehearsals, preparation, and getting into the right mindset for the performance. At the same time, we really want to make the most of everything the Fringe has to offer — seeing shows, discovering the artists who are part of it, and immersing ourselves in the incredible creative atmosphere. And of course, we’re also looking forward to experiencing the streets of Edinburgh and the unique energy of the city itself.

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

The best thing about performing at the Fringe is the opportunity to meet new people working in the same field, creating connections and exchanges that can become inspiring and valuable for future collaborations and artistic growth.

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

We’ll definitely bring our lucky charms with us — the ones that always accompany us for every performance away from home. But something we also love doing is collecting memories from the places we visit, so we’re sure we’ll bring back something that will remind us of Edinburgh and of our Fringe experience.

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

We think some of the best ways to save money during the Fringe are making the most of our apartment for meals and trying to cook as much as possible. We’ll also aim to get around mostly on foot, or by bike where possible — not only to save money, but also to take the opportunity to explore and experience the city along the way.
