QUESTIONS:
Hello! Tell us all about your show!
LANDSFRAU هموطن is a solo theatre performance framing 9/11 and the withdrawal of the Western troops from Afghanistan 20 years later. It works like an VHS tape that is rewinded, played in fast forward at times damaged or rewritten. Afghan Folk music collides with electronic beats and Attan meets Contemporary dance. Our protagonist Ariana dismantles images of Afghanistan and builds her own counter narrative through a feminist lens. The play is built around the creeping feeling of guilt living a supposedly safe life abroad.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Honestly the preparation as an artistic collective is so overwhelming that I didn‘t have much time to have a look at the program yet. But through our bookers Aurora Nova I know of some other artists that they are representing this year. The Show ALIENS of Curious Industries and Dumbworld seems to be very interesting. It always moves me to see real family members on stage and I am excited for this Immigrant-mother- daughter-adventure.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
It‘s our first time! We are an independent theatre collective from Germany that is trying their luck this year.
Even though I am a professionally trained actress I‘ve never played 24 shows in a row, since the system in Germany is different. Over here shows have longer breaks in between. So my biggest fear is becoming ill because of stress, a lack of sleep and bad nutrition. On the other hand I don‘t wanna miss out on the fun of going out and seeing other shows as well. So I guess I will drink a lot of Ginger Shots, sleep as long as I can and take supplements to power through this theatre-marathon. Our show starts at 14:50 so there is time to get up late. In fact I like to see Fringe as an athletic event for me as a performer that I have to prepare mentally and physically for. But I try to be part of it with the joy and curiosity that I would have as an audience member of a music festival.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
I imagine the Fringe like the Dionysian Games.
So in Greek Mythology there is a god called Dionysos. He is the god of wine, celebration, theater, fertility, and ecstasy. And the Dionysian Games were ancient festivals and competitions held in honor of him, including music, dancing, poetry, and especially theatrical performances.
I wish for us to celebrate creativity and the power of storytelling in a similar way this summer in Edinburgh.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
- going for a swim between 10am and 11 am
- Eating breakfast
- Flyering between 12 pm and 1 pm
- Preparations for the Show (checking our stage Design, preparing Tea)
- 2 pm physical and voice warm up
- 2.50 pm show time
- 3.50 pm cleaning the stage for the next performers, doing laundry if necessary
- Rest (love me a powernap)
- afterwards enjoying the programme of this years EdFringe – watching other shows, Network, celebrate / alternatively going for a long walk or hike with my best friend that is also the Sound & Subtitle operator
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I will definitely check out the Afghan Restaurants in Edinburgh: Kabul Kitchen for example. Especially when I am traveling I crave this kind of opulent Soul Food that my family prepares at home.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The opportunity of connecting with great Creatives from all around the globe. I will have my Notebook with me because I imagine being inspired all the time. The best case would be international touring after our run and people to collaborate with in the future. Because in a time of Crisis artists need to collaborate on a worldwide level to become free from oppressions of certain political Institutions and borders.
But there is another thing I am really looking forward to. I have a dream of connecting the Afghan Diaspora that is shattered like a puzzle all over the world via theater. I know that there is a certain megalomaniac thinking behind it but I already see the work of AVAH Collective in the field of fine arts making great work and want to use my storytelling skills to share stories from within our Community soon. EdFringe 2026 could open the doors to do that in the future.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Since I am in my thirties now it will be my own pillow. Haha. As a freelance actress I learned pretty early to live out of a bag.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
We are planning to get us an airfryer and cook as if we would be home.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
Instagram is probably the best way – follow my profile @mariannyar (performer), our collective @doriscrea.kollektiv (artistic team) and @auroranovaorg (bookers) or @bowproduction (Producers)
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Don‘t forget Afghanistan
