Hello! Tell us all about your show!
Well, Best. Dad. NEVER. is a solo act about setting out to raise a self-confident biracial daughter but coming up against my scars as a gay Armenian-American. It’s inspired by personal pieces I published in The New York Times, Washington Post, and O The Oprah Magazine, and had a successful run at the 2025 Hollywood Fringe. Critics called it “brutally timely” and “twice brilliant,” so it feels ready for the Edinburgh big leagues. The show is full of funny stories of fumbling through fatherhood, yet the message is about what we inherit, what we pass down, and the inherent conflict in striving to be good.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
First, my friends’ shows Notes from a Narcissistic Negro and Other N Words as well as Roomies. Then other great acts at my venue Just The Tonic at The Mash House including Jonathan Rudge: Stay at Home Son. I’m intrigued by Critique Cabaret and MAJENIN – A Palestinian Love Story, the kind of engrossing, thought-provoking work I love. And definitely The Last Funny Woman because if the title’s true, I need to see that.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
Performing 24 times in 25 days, I’m looking forward to owning my show like my own heartbeat. I’m excited to work in real time among thousands of artists. And coming from parched Los Angeles, I can’t wait to feel Scottish rain on my skin.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe.
What I expect:
0800H Wake up half-asleep. 0900H Drink tea to nourish the vocal chords. 1000H Walk to Arthur’s Seat to clear my head. 1250H Call time. I’m finally fully woken up. 1305H Perform Best. Dad. NEVER. 1405H Float out of the Mash House. 1600H – 2100H Hang out with new friends, see shows, have a meal. 2200H Go to bed half-awake. Too early? Not for Dad.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
A dear friend whose daughter attends the University recommends the lunch special at Paz Taqueria on Thistle Street. I’m eager to taste my favourite Mexican flavours with local Lothian ingredients.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The marvellous folks at Just the Tonic. And telling a story I’ve kept inside for so long.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Yes, my husband and daughter. With them, I have everything from home.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
Afternoons you can find me stocking up at Aldi and Lidl, discount gourmet markets. Although I’ve been told that applause at the Fringe can be more sustaining than food. And costs zero quid, if you don’t count the sweat equity.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Instagram.com/h41g and Instagram.com/best.dad.never and https://www.tiktok.com/@best.dad.never
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Best. Show. EVER.
