Hello! Tell us all about your show!
TOM: Hello!
OWEN: Hello!
TOM: We create a live TV variety show on stage with a live band, a grumpy puppet, remote control cameras, video sketches and someone with a camera on their head capturing close ups.
OWEN: Hello!
TOM: We did that.
OWEN: Sorry.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
TOM: Margaret Thatcher Queen of Soho is one of our all-time Fringe favs and she’s back! (With Queen of Hollywood)
OWEN: We’re also big fans of Crybabies and they’ve got a new show this year which we can’t wait to see.
TOM: And we’re directing Abby Govindan’s show this year. She’s funny too.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
TOM: Our first show here was a Blues Brothers Tribute band back in 2006.
OWEN: We know what you’re thinking, what a couple of cool dudes.
TOM: But we first brought Mr. Thing to the Fringe in 2018 and since then we have learned so much just by doing it every night.
OWEN: Cheeky.
TOM: This is the best place to develop your act so lean into that as much as you can.
OWEN: And make sure you take your berocca and get a couple of early nights. It’s a marathon not a sprint.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
TOM: Wake up around 12 covered in an uneaten panquake having missed all the shows you promised yourself you’d wake up for.
OWEN : Have a hangover breakfast at the City Cafe.
TOM : Spend five hours becoming a person again before you do your show. Then do your show.
OWEN:Have one civilised pint. Then another few to complete the round.
TOM: Then twelve more because you snuck into one of the swanky artist bars for karaoke night and Tim Key is singing U Can’t Touch This.
OWEN: Get kicked out for trying to touch it.
TOM: Get to bed at 5am excited to eat a panquake.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
OWEN & TOM (In spooky unison) Palmyra.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
OWEN: Making new mates and seeing exciting new things. Then promising to see your new mates exciting new things and leaving it all to the very last day.
TOM: It’s stupidly expensive and insanely tiring and all the venues are weird and hot… but that’s sort of what makes it so special. Within all of that is this sweaty melting pot of new and exciting things and there is just nothing else like it.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
TOM: The Mr. Thing show is created by a collective of lots of our clever friends and family, so we mostly bring them. And a cardboard cut out of Debbie McGee.
OWEN: I also bring my foldable 4 pint carrier, best £2.99 I ever spent.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
OWEN: We’ve previously spent more money than most shows entire budgets on a remote controlled Kevin Bacon. So don’t ask us.
TOM: Or our accountant.
OWEN: Maybe stay in Inverness for a cheap Fringe?
TOM: Cheap Fringe is an oxymoron.
OWEN: Don’t be so rude.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
TOM: On instagram we are called wearething – a decision we made 10 years ago and have regretted ever since.
OWEN: Better than being called an oxy moron.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
TOM: Because…
OWEN: That’s just one word
TOM: No I wanted to do that thing where we take it in turns. Like when the Comedy Store players do a bit about training a walrus or something.
OWEN: Got it.
TOM: Because…
OWEN: …we train walruses?
TOM: Nevermind.
OWEN: Unpredictable multimedia chaos?
TOM: Better.
