Hello! Tell us all about your show!
My show is ‘Call Me Elizabeth,’ a one-woman show about Elizabeth Taylor. Through an intimate conversation at the Beverly Hills Hotel, ‘Call Me Elizabeth’ examines the movie star’s life, career, and loves as she grapples with the culture of celebrity and her greatest role as a humanitarian. The show will be presented in two parts on alternating days, with Part 1 examining her origin story through 1961, and Part 2 exploring her entry into the fight against AIDS in 1985.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Among many highlights, I’m looking forward to seeing ‘11½ Angry Men,’ ‘Smile: The Charlie Chaplin Story’ (Pleasance), ‘Ludwig: Unfinished Business’, and ‘The Tao of Lloyd’ (Assembly Rooms).
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
This will be my third time at the Fringe! I encourage newcomers to map out your days with a balance of live performances and sightseeing – Edinburgh has a storied history and a fascinating array of significant landmarks. Also, allow gaps in your schedule so that you can take in spontaneous shows. Some of my most memorable Fringe experiences have happened by chance!
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
With my prior short runs, I have split my days between performances and sightseeing. As I will be doing a full run at this year’s Fringe, my days will be more regimented to support the stamina needed for a solo show. Each day will start with a solid breakfast, followed by yoga, getting into hair/makeup/costume, and the performance itself. As time and energy allows, I hope to catch other performances as well.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
I like to celebrate my opening performance with a candlelit dinner in The Secret Garden at The Witchery. It is so tranquil (quite a contrast from the chaos of the Fringe) – once you make it up the Royal Mile! As I settle into the run, I like to split my meals between a variety of different local restaurants and also cooking at home.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
The serendipitous nature of the Fringe is truly incredible. With each of my previous Fringe experiences, I have met such interesting artists and audiences, both at performances and also in the streets of Edinburgh. Several of these spontaneous encounters have developed into lasting friendships and collaborations. I am looking forward to what this year will bring!
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
I try to pack minimally because I have to carry my show with me – Elizabeth did not travel lightly! I do like to leave space in my suitcase for possible souvenirs such as wool shawls, vintage finds, and shortbread!
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
If your accommodations allow, try to cook at home and patronize local markets for fresh ingredients. Also take advantage of ticket concessions offered for various productions such as “2-for-1” offers and special offers for artists at the same venue.
