Hello! Tell us all about your show!
The Yellow Wallpaper is a 6-person dance thriller play adapted from the classic short story. The main character Jane, played by Megan, is prescribed The Rest Cure, the leading treatment for “female hysteria” in 1982. Jane’s solitary confinement in a room of yellow wallpaper leads to a psychosis in which she believes there are women trapped in the walls that she must set free. Caitlin’s choreography is the star of the show, as three women of the wallpaper bring the room to life through visceral and haunting dance sequences.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
We can’t wait to see our friend Drew Lausch’s show, Friendliest. Our show is very dance and physical theater heavy, so of course, we’re also looking forward to Xhloe and Natasha’s new play. For our feminist fill, we’ll definitely be seeing Merlesque, and for the horror/thriller genre, One Man Poe stands out to us so far.
If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?
Both of us attended Fringe in 2014 as spectators, and we have been dying to come back ever since! There really is nothing like Fringe – a whole city is turned upside down for theater. It’s incredible.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe.
Our 10-person company is all staying together, so we’ll start the day with a brief huddle to go over show notes and set the plan for the day’s outreach efforts. We are doing a bit of everything – from street performances to hosting master classes and talkbacks to guerilla-style flyering and comp swapping with other shows to get the word out. Our show is at 16:05, so by 5:30 PM, we’ll all disperse, grab dinner, and catch shows for the rest of the evening.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
We’ve previously done The Yellow Wallpaper for very short runs. First at NYC Fringe, then a quick Off-Off Broadway showcase. We’re so excited to be able to dig in and see what we can learn about the show from a longer run, and how we’ll build on that for the next iteration.
Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?
Noise-cancelling headphones. Never leave home without them.
What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?
We are more than happy to swap comps with other shows.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@theyellowwallpaperplay on Instagram and Tiktok
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Sexy haunted house
