Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Muse. They are such a unique band and whilst I don’t listen to them very much anymore I adore their musicality. Some of their songs are masterpieces and this month I thought I would delve into some of their fantastic music videos.

Cryogen – Muse

Why did you choose this particular video?

It is one of their most recent music videos so I thought it would be interesting to take a look at it as it is completely different era and also there is a lot more budget involved in these videos nowadays.

So, what is the narrative?

The band are on a frozen planet with a bright red waterfall. Maybe depicting the loneliness that is depicted in the lyrics. A space ship appears out of the red water shooting fire and sort of ends the video – maybe depicting there is another chapter to this world?

Favourite parts of the video?

This video relies heavily on CGI and if you compare it to something like Plug In Baby you will notice just how advanced they have become. The CGI brings the icy planet to life and creates the drama that you expect and want from a Muse music video and it is creative and impactful.

The colour red plays an important part in the video. It is a darker red then you could imagine and it is on the bands outfits to really highlight the deep red of the waterfall in the distance. It works really well and creates a sense of warmth in a cold place as well as a sense of colour symmetry.

Finally, the camera shots such as the pan shots make the video incredibly effective as it brings you into the world of this music video and also creates the drama. Other great shots are the long shots with the band at a distance as it makes you feel the environment and the extreme close ups to help you feel the intensity.

Magic Of the Music Video will return in September
