Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of Muse. They are such a unique band and whilst I don’t listen to them very much anymore I adore their musicality. Some of their songs are masterpieces and this month I thought I would delve into some of their fantastic music videos.
Plug In Baby – Muse
Why did you choose this particular video?
Older Muse songs was what for me into the bands music and I remember seeing the video for the first time as a kid and thinking this was incredibly unique and striking. When you look at it now, the graphics may not look basic but at the time they were really striking.
So, what is the narrative?
Any time women listen to their music it effects them and it creates an impact on them and they start turning into elements of aliens. By the end you realise it is all a metaphor for the title of the song.
Favourite parts of the video?

We have to talk about the graphics you can tell they are around the Millennium as they have to feel of many bands at this time. They look very basic now but at the time they would be really modern. Throughout the graphics becomes more intense and interesting as they transform into aliens.

The song is very fast paced meaning that the editing is also very quick, various angles and it creates the near and the drama to the song. This fast editing means that it feels you in and makes you want to be engaged.

The lighting is quite subtle in this video which gives it a sense of reality and makes you believe that this is happening in the real world and not in a different dimension.
