Magic Of The Music Video – The Missed Tapes – Houdini, Eminem

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are doing something a bit different – since I started this article I have had to choose four or five music videos for each month for the selected band or artist I decide to discuss. However, there are some videos that I love that just miss out on entering the top of my favourites so I thought it would be fin this month to do something called The Missed Tapes and have a look at music videos by bands we have previously covered but did not get a chance to shine in the sun.

Houdini – Eminem

Why did you choose this particular video?

I know we only just covered Eminem the other month but there are so many fantastic videos. I felt I needed to talk about another one. We never spoke about Houdini and I think it’s time that we did. It is a great call back to other videos and also taking the mickey out of himself.

So, what is the narrative?

This is a video that parodies the Without Me video and it replays parts of the video and takes the Mickey out of how old Eminem has become.

Favourite parts of the video?

The editing is amazing in this video – it is fast, creative and striking. It is something that also creates the comedy in the video and it makes you want to laugh at it in a lot of places. Another great edit choice is the split screen between old Eminem and the new Eminem.

One of the best thing about this video is the cartoon graphics. It creates the narrative and also produces so much of the comedy. It is such a simple effect as it works so well.

The final thing I want to mention is the sound effects – throughout the music stops to heighten action, sound effects or even dialogue are used as well. It creates a lot of fun and comedic scenarios. For example the climbing of the wall.
