Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Lady Grey and The Earls

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

‘AFTERGLOW’. A rocking funk groove.

Your favourite lyric in this song:

“Mozart plays on razor blades”

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

‘ONCE UPON A TIME’. Created for the soundtrack of the original stage production ‘LOOKING GLASS’.

Your favourite song to play live:

I have two, actually. ‘WHITE ROOM’ – one of the earliest tracks I wrote. It holds a special place in my heart because of that. It’s short, snappy and is rarely not used as our set opener. And also, ‘LOOKING GLASS’. A drum and bass-esque party number, guaranteed to get the room jumping at the end of a gig.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

‘ELECTRIC MIST’. This took about a year. I had a cacophony of ideas for this song littered with imagery, and I was struggling to organise them into something special. I stopped fighting it, let it flow and the images arranged themselves. It was beautiful.

One of your previous tracks you would recommend for first time listeners of your music and why?

‘CHASING THE HORIZON’. The band has continuously evolved sound wise, but this one has notes of our original rock routes AND emphasise the funk element we began to introduce in equal measures to the rock. It’s a banging tune with a driven bass and explosive vocals. Such an ear-worm.

Dream collaboration:

A mixture from the band members, but if I had to choose, I’d love to hear Lady Grey scream it out with Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

There’s an element of apprehension as I walk onstage, but it dissipates in the first few chords of the first song. Then I’m in my element. Then I’m just where I’m supposed to be.

The track that is most fun to play live:

I’d go with ‘LOOKING GLASS’ again. Not being much of a dancer, it really gets me moving.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Lip balm.

Describe your fans in three words:

Loyal, loud and insane!

A song released in the last few years by an artist or band you wish you had written:

There’s a Christmas Song I LOVE call ‘Stars Adorn This Silent night’. I wish I’d written that. Oh wait…I did…

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

2 completed albums, gigs and a new music video.
