Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released.
Our latest single is LSC, and we released it with a music video. Thank you to Brad Thompson Visuals for that. It’s pretty heavy, but it starts out really soft and lures you in. It’s kind of sexy, and then it grabs you by the neck and drags you in. It’s a nice light-heavy version of us, which you guys haven’t heard yet. But it definitely brings you into the softer side that we’re going to be tapping into more, that I’m definitely going to be tapping into more.
I am really excited that the music video went so well. It’s amazing to have your ideas come to life. Shout out to Val Lord Heathen, he helped us with that epic fire that you see in the video. And Kyle Ferguson, my buddy who let me rip him apart on screen.
We also have a brand new music video out for Deep Star. That was the very first song we ever released, so we finally have the music video out for that too. Again, Brad Thompson Visuals, and thank you to Melina Kombat for being Deep Star and really making that video what it is. We filmed it on the rooftop of my work… I DJ at Shade Gentlemen Club, so shout out to Shade for letting us use their rooftop to make the video.
Both songs almost take you into this otherworldly space. Deep Star is very atmospheric, very space… a woman from another planet, here to save us all. And then LSC is just this crazy-ass chick ripping people’s heads off. Two beautiful creatures from those two songs.
Your favourite lyric in this song.
There are so many, and it changes. But I guess for now I’ll say, for LSC: “As the blood runs down my face, I tear through your flesh and bone. Guts are spilling while I get my fill.”
For Deep Star: “She was sent out to restore the blackness in our hearts, picking up the pieces we left scattered on the floor.”
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track.
We only have four singles out right now, and we have a seven-song vinyl album coming out soon… this summer. Out of the four singles, I’ll have to choose I’ll See You in the Stars.
It was a bit of an emotional, vulnerable song to put out about a personal experience of mine that I’ve carried for decades. It’s kind of crazy how when I wrote it out and then recorded it, bawling my eyes out recording it, and then it went out into the world… I actually feel like it healed me. It healed me to write it all out and to put it out there. And now I can move on. Getting this song out there really healed parts of me that have been suffering for so long.
Your favourite song to play live.
That changes all the time. For a while there, it was Far Away from Home, which will be coming out on our new album. It’s a fun, punky song about aliens. Then it went into LSC. I love playing LSC because I get to really get into the crowd and look deep into their souls. The whole song is just a vibe.
The song that was the longest to write and why.
We have a couple of those, but definitely Fire Inside. That’s also on our new album coming out. It took forever, to the point where I would sit there with a blank piece of paper at my favourite coffee shop, Stopgap Coffee here in Edmonton. My friend Caleb, who owns it, would say, “You’ve been sitting here all day and there’s nothing on the paper.”
So yeah, that took so freaking long. We would even play it live at shows because the instruments were done, and I would just freestyle the lyrics. I’d ask the crowd, “What do you want this song to be about?” and I would just sing to whatever it was about, right on the spot. That song took forever. And then finally, it just came about. Sometimes it’s the big emotions that make a song complete, whether you’re really happy or really mad. It really helps to write a song or get one finished.
Your most emotional track.
I’ll See You in the Stars. That’s a tear-jerker for me. Very vulnerable, just putting my whole heart out for the world to see. But I guess that’s art, right?
It’s almost embarrassing to say, but decades of obsessing over someone who’s not meant to be. They’re not there, and you’re not supposed to be together. I went to a tarot reader one time and asked, “Why can’t I get over this person? I don’t understand. I want to get over this.” And she said that we have a soul contract, which is a neat idea. She said that we’ve lived many lifetimes together.
I’m not huge into the tarot stuff, but I love having different perspectives and different ideas. I take what resonates. That’s where “I’ll see you in the stars” comes from. If it’s a thing that we’ve actually lived many lifetimes together, then wouldn’t you want to go explore new souls? It’s almost deeply romantic in a way… I’m honoured that I got to spend the time we had together. And I’ll see you in the stars. I’ll see you in another lifetime.
There’s also another very emotional track coming out called Rain, totally out of left field, on our new album.
Dream collaboration.
I would really love to collab with a lot of my female friends out in the world. I’ve been really wanting to work with Sin. She’s from bands like Tessitura, and she’s also in Ditch Pisser and Animalistic.
I would love to collab with Brittney Slayes from Unleash the Archers. We’ve toured together for years, and I’m so proud of her and everything they’ve done. It’d be so rad to collab with her. I could name a hundred billion other people. I want to collab with everybody and anybody, because you never know what’s going to happen when you put your music and your ideas together.
If I have to choose right in this exact moment, Dax Riggs definitely comes up, from Acid Bath and many other projects.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show.
It’s the only place that my brain completely turns off. It’s complete addiction in a good way. I feel complete. I feel whole when I’m up there. I feel like nothing can touch me. When I’m up there, that is what I’m meant to do. This is my destiny, and there’s nowhere I’d rather be.
The rush is so intense that after the fact, you almost black out and don’t remember the show. You’re definitely high off of it for a couple hours until you just completely shut down. I feel like for any musician, it’s the reason why we drive billions of hours, jam billions of hours, put in all this money and all this work… all for what seems like one minute on that stage. It’s like a drug.
The hardest track to play live.
I guess I could say Far Away from Home. It’s a newer track and it’s got a lot of vocals all smashed in. Very punky vibe, very fast.
But also, most of the songs, if I’m not in a good headspace, every song is hard to play. When I’m happy and relaxed, the voice comes out of me effortlessly, it just soars. But if I’m not in a good mindset and I’m self-doubting, it’s hard to hit those notes. Lately these notes have been coming out of me where I don’t even know where they come from. I record them, they’re out there, and then I have to sing them. So it’s definitely a challenge.
Essential items you always take on tour with you.
Pack as light as you can. If you’re going on a thirty-day tour, bring forty to fifty pairs of underwear and socks. Of course, your passport.
I feel like headphones are a good one, because you’re in tiny spaces with these people for a really long time, and it’s nice to disconnect and have music in your ears while you’re travelling. I love to have this fanny pack thing, but it’s really flat. I put all my money and my passports in it, and then I tuck it under my clothes, under my shirt. So it’s right on your body.
Honestly, you don’t need as much as you think you do. Packing light is a blessing. You already have all your gear, and sometimes it’s really hard to get around. You need your backpack or suitcase, but basically just essentials in it.
Describe your fans in three words.
It’s funny, you just said the word in the last question and it’s perfect. Essential, epic, and beautiful. Definitely hard to just choose three.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written.
That’s a good question. I could say a thousand things, but the one that’s speaking to me right now is Diary of a Madman by Ozzy Osbourne. Or anything by Pink Floyd. Alice in Chains.
What we can look forward to from your band this year.
We are excited to put out our seven-song album on vinyl. To raise money for that, we’re going to do a cool old-school hall show in April in Edmonton. We really want to get out to Toronto, and we really want to get out to B.C.
Before we release the whole album, we’re going to release a single with a music video. We’re playing a festival, and who knows what else is in store. But we’re excited. And yes Europe we are coming!
