Today’s Featured Improv Act – INTERVIEW – Creature From The Unknown

Tell Us about:

Your latest improv show:

Our upcoming show is our first full show as a group! We’ll be at Town and Gown in Cambridge on 26th March from 7pm. In Creature From The Unknown, a small group of people in the Victorian era are plagued by the presence of a monster. They must expel or redeem the evil before they succumb to it – once they actually realise there’s a monster amongst them. We staged a shorter version of Creature as part of a scratch night (Pick ‘N’ Mix at the Boathouse, Cambridge) last year, In that show, we focussed on a pair of orphans working at a Little Chef, which was being inspected by a Prince who was really a giant mouth that loved to eat dirt. It was chaos, it was fun, and it was just a taste of what’s to come from our next show!

Your favourite suggestion you have been given?

For a game of genre rollercoaster, we were once given Prime Minister’s Questions. In the game, this came up immediately after we had been performing a Star Wars-style space opera, so we just had a debate about if Ewoks were too cute and got the audience to be our backbenchers.

Your favourite venue to perform at:

The Blue Moon in Cambridge. It’s a small space, but there’s always such a loving audience that’s eager to have fun and see a great show. And it’s got pizzas.

Improv hero:

It’s so hard to pick just one! Brennan Lee Mulligan has been a massive inspiration of late; one of the most talented storytellers and comedians, and able to craft something intriguing yet hilarious on the spot.

Dream venue to play at:

The Comedy Store in London. A fantastic venue filled with incredible improv, home to some of the best improv talent in the country. And it’s got pizzas.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show

At first, a massive spike of fear. Then, as the applause cascades around me, I remember the joy of the stage and the joy that will be brought to those around me (hopefully). And then, I remember to have fun.

The hardest improv suggestion to perform and why:

Asking for a genre and getting ‘comedy’. We’re trying! That’s literally all we’re doing!

Essential items you always take with you to a show:

A bottle of water and the crow mask that is becoming the mascot of Creature.

Describe your fans in three words:

Goths, nerds, friends.

What we can look forward to from you this year:

After our full-length debut on March 26th, we’ll have a run of four shows in the Corpus Playroom with the ADC Theatre in July, with some guests from across the London and Cambridge improv scene. Then a Halloween special at Cambridge Junction on Friday 30th October!
