Sunday Book Club: Billy Connolly’s Route 66, Billy Connolly

Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are looking at the travel diaries of Billy Connolly travelling across Route 66.

Billy Connolly’s Route 66 (2012)

Billy Connolly

Synopsis

Britain’s best-loved comedian hits the most famous highway in the world on an unforgettable journey. Billy Connolly, music-lover, biker, and scourge of the beige and bland the world over, has dreamed about taking a trip on the legendary Route 66 since he heard Chuck Berry belting out one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll records of all time. And now he’s finally had the chance to do it, travelling every mile on his custom-made trike in search of the real America that can still be found beyond the nation’s freeways. Taking in both the essential icons and the hidden gems of the ‘Mother Road’, Billy also meets up with plenty of the memorable characters who call it home. With his instinct for a good story, and the infectious enthusiasm that has made him our most engaging national treasures, Billy Connolly is the ultimate guide to the ultimate road trip.

Positive Points

This is a book that takes you on a really interesting adventure and whilst Route 66 has been written about many times it is nice to hear it from Billy’s perspective. There are parts of the route that he stops off at that other books may not necessarily do which means you gain a further insight into the world of the journey.

Negative Points

At some points throughout the book it feels a bit repetitive it may not be Billy’s fault as it sounds like parts of the route are quite monotonous.

Overall Review

It is a book that is interesting and you learn new things but it is not a book that I would say is the best travel log. It is an addition to the television series so if you enjoyed that you may enjoy reading more behind the scenes. It is the fact that Route 66 is quite in reality boring to read about as it is made for tourists these days and that does not help the narrative.
