Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life – Getting Vertical With Tony Hawk

I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’

It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.

Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.

I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are delving into a podcast that is really fun to listen to…

Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life
Episode: Getting Vertical With Tony Hawk
Podcast: Pretty Sure I Can Fly

I came across the podcast too late to show you how late I am I came across it, a week after subscribing there was an episode released saying it was the last ever one! Gutted. Saying that, there are still a feast of episodes in it’s back catalogue that have a right to be put into the limelight which is what we are going to do today.

The first episode I decided to listen to was Tony Hawks – it is well into the seasons but it was the first one that appealed to me as I scrolled down the shows.

There were many reasons why I chose to start with Tony Hawks first – I have always been a fan of his skating, his computer games and I know he has a friendship with Johnny Knoxville as he appeared in many episodes of Jackass and also the films.

It is a fun episode as it goes behind the scenes of how Tony became a professional skater, his time on the show Jackass and a lot more as well. It has some really fun anecdotes on it too.

The show is co-hosted by Elna Baker, it is a good combination because Johnny can be quite excitable and goes off topic. Elna reels in the conversations and asks the really interesting questions that allow the audience to be able to delve deeper into a topic.

It is a shame that I came across this podcast so late but I am excited about all the episodes I have left to listen to as they interview some really interesting people. From Jackass team members such as Steve-O to extreme sport legends such as Matt Hoffman and Rodney Mullen.
