Telly Addict – This Week – Sherlock: The Lying Detective

Welcome to a brand new feature! Every other week we are going to be looking at a different episode of a television show and delve into the world of that show! There is so many great television programmes out there that some of the are forgotten about or they even just get left behind. So let’s celebrate the world of television.

Show: Sherlock
Episode: The Lying Detective
Original Release Date: 2017

It took me a long time to decide whether to watch Sherlock. Actually a long commute to work decided it for me. When I first started working in television, my commute one way was two hours so I would watch television to make it go a lot faster when I didn’t want to read. I had never read the books of Sherlock Holmes at the time but I had heard good things about the show.

I instantly liked it, there was only 3 seasons available at the time so there was a gap before the rest. I used this time to read all the books. I even went to an exhibition at the Museum of London (this was before I read the books so a lot of it I didn’t understand thoroughly until I read the books).

I loved the show t adored the books. Some of the short stories were amazing and one of my favourites was called The Dying Detective – it is so good and so clever it is one of my favourite short stories of all time.

When it was announced that in the final season of the show they were going to do an episode that would be inspired by this short story I was really excited.

It was obvious from reviews, a lot of people did not like it.

From people who I knew who watched this episode and reviewers who watched it found it very random and confusing. I found it fascinating how they had put such a modern spin to it.

I feel that having the background knowledge of the story and then watching this version meant that I could truly appreciate it. It was so cleverly done, I adore it and felt it was such a great adaption.

The story is very short and I felt that the adaption did a good job filling it out and making it into something more substantial.

If you were not a fan of the Lying Detective, I urge you to read the short story and then watch this episode to truly enjoy it.
