Magic of the Music Video – Kasabian Month – Vlad The Impaler

Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Kasabian. They are one of the best indie bands in the United Kingdom and they have some really interesting music videos as they use muted colours and really fun editing techniques to bring a song alive.

Vlad The Impaler – Kasabian

Why did you choose this particular video?

If we are going to talk about Kasabian we have to bring Noel Fielding into the conversation because he is close friends with Sergio. This video features him so I thought it would be great to look at it. Just like Noel it is also very random and unique.

So, what is the narrative?

The video is directed by Richard Ayoade, and it follows Noel’s character around as he hunts down people to ‘impale’ with his sword.

Favourite parts of the video

I really like the colour grade of this music video, it is slightly faded to give it a sort of age to it. It also has a slight distortion to it to make it look like an old film. It works really well and reels you into the video. It looks historic which also heightens the comedy.

There are some really clever edits throughout, they are only very tiny parts of the video but they are really clever and work really well. Near the end of the video there is a clip of Vlad opening his cape and another version of him pops out to stab someone and then disappears when the original Vlad shuts his coat.

The colour red is used very innovatively throughout the music video. Initially, it is very simple with the odd hint through light flares but as the video goes on it is more apparent and then right near the end you see hints of graphic scenes of when people get stabbed.
