The other day I was going to have some spare time in London so I thought – I haven’t done improv in a while let’s book a drop in lesson for some fun – then I had to double check the price, the lesson had gone up by quite a lot since I last went to that particular lesson.
The last time I participated in an improv drop i lesson was just before covid hit and it was for around £10-13. To see that it has now gone up to around £28 plus booking left my jaw dropped. I then decided to look at classes to see how much they had risen. The last time I did an eight week course and to be fair they have only risen by around £15 which isn’t as much as it could’ve been.
Cost of Living has changed everything, so has the pandemic and it means that things such as improv are becoming expensive – not just because of paying the teachers but all the other things such as room hire.
I am not sure if I would want to be an improv team at the moment – room hire would really strain the amount of money that it would take to run rehearsals and then you have to think of everything else that goes with it. Luckily social media has reached a place where it is easy to promote shows and without little or hardly any money which can help.
To all those who do run improv shows and lessons, I applause you for being able to keep it alive in a tough situation.
