Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of S Club 7, there are so many reasons why I decided to kick off the year with this band. Firstly they are incredibly uplifting to start 2026 and I think it is a fun pop band to look at. They were around everywhere in the late nineties and early noughties as they were not just a pop band, they also had a television show on CBBC, even auditioned for S Club 8 and had a film. So let’s delve into the world this month.
S Club Party – S Club 7
Why did you choose this particular video?
This song has elements of things that were really relevant to the world and the story of the first S Club 7 television show Miami 7. It is a great video and I spent a lot of the time in my childhood dancing to this song.
So, what is the narrative?
They head back to the late fifties and have a car drag race with another team in the desert just like the Grease film.
Favourite parts of the video
Straight off the top, we have to talk about the graphic that is used to show the gang going back to the past. This is the late nineties, basic graphics are used and it still looks reasonably good even if it is basic. A really sample effect that works so well and already reels the viewer in – even now!
It is set in the fifties so there is a clear copy in the narrative of the car race in Grease which means that is creates a pace to the video in a simple and fun way.
The best part of the video is the shots of the slow motion jumping. They are in a higher, bolder contrast and having all the members of the band draw the letter S for the S Club 7 logo is so simple but really effective for the video.
Finally, the dance shots makes this video joyous, whilst simply shot and edited in a basic way, it makes the audience want to be part of the song and get involved with the fun party that is happening in front of them. Sometimes simplicity is the best in editing.
